Aves 2018 - Week 8

This year I thought I would take on a quilting challenge, so I signed up for Aves, a Block of the Week quilt by Kathryn Kerr of Green Avenue Quilts.

Every Sunday starting 21 January 2018, I receive the instructions to complete one block for the quilt. The plan is to complete the current block before the next one is released.

Week 1
Another sale at the usual fabric shop meant I was there in the morning when the place opened to try and pick up some more fabric for the quilt.  I managed to pick up two important bits that I have been lucky to not need yet.

When the email came through about the weekly block, it was the ring of triangles as expected. However, I was quite exited to find that there was also the first set of instructions for assembling the blocks - which required more blocks to be made to attach to the four 6 1/2" blocks I already have.

So Sunday afternoon was spent cutting out pieces for both the ring of triangles and the assembly blocks.  Good thing there is a lot of TV watching I have lined up.  I'd also treated myself to a new blade for my rotary cutter. It was like cutting through butter!  I don't know why I waited so long to replace it.

So after spending a few evenings (and even a few sneaky minutes before work) I had turned my squares into rectangles. These will end up in between four of the five large circles at some point.

Adding the extra bits on has hidden the less than perfect edges, and gave me the opportunity to make a couple of the squares look like they always were a standard 6".

Then it was on to the triangle ring. This was the same as before, just a different colour combo. I sewed the triangles on to the paper foundation every evening until I either got tired or bored, and by Friday evening the six sections were complete. I waited until after my Saturday run, shop and library visit before joining the sections and trimming the ring to size. I'm quite happy with the result.

There was only one thing left to do - attach the ring to last week's circle. Having done this once already, I knew that as long as I put a ridiculous amount of pins in the two pieces, attaching the two curves by machine would be pretty straightforward. And it was. I redid a couple of sections of the seam where the points didn't quite meet where I wanted - without unpicking, as no one is looking at the back - and I soon had a pretty decent block.

The past two weeks of sewing have definitely kept me busy. I do hope we are back on to the small blocks again tomorrow. I guess I will find out when the morning email arrives.
