Aves 2018 - Week 2

This year I thought I would take on a quilting challenge, so I signed up for Aves, a Block of the Week quilt by Kathryn Kerr of Green Avenue Quilts.

Every Sunday starting 21 January 2018, I receive the instructions to complete one block for the quilt.  The plan is to complete the current block before the next one is released..

Week 2

The new block was released on Sunday, but was it an easy one like I was hoping for? To compensate for the hard one last week?  Not exactly. This week's task was to sew a ring of triangles around last week's circle block.

I still haven't finished buying all the fabric required for this quilt, but happily this section required three fabrics I already have. I spent Sunday afternoon watching Netflix and cutting out 54 blocks in various colours, and turning them into 108 triangles.

I printed out the templates for foundation piecing the ring of triangles at work on Monday, but forgot to bring them home. It wasn't until Wednesday after work that I had the chance to start sewing. It took me two evenings to get to the ring of triangles finished.

Yay!  But no. I'm not finished unfortunately.  This ring needs to be attached to last week's circle.

The instructions included a number of methods to join the two pieces together, but in the end I decided I was lazy and didn't want to spend the time appliqueing/hand sewing, and would machine sew the curves.  Luckily I have had a little experience with sewing curves, having helped grandma with two single bed size drunkards path quilts about a bajillion years ago.  So Saturday morning I pinned the buggery out of the two pieces and then proceeded to procrastinate by tidying up the house, doing the washing, etc. until I decided I just had to go ahead and sew the circle and ring together.  But finally it was done.  And after some serious pressing, this is what I ended up with...

Overall I am happy with it.  Though there are bits I wish were better - some of the points in the star aren't quite as I would like them to be.  But I know what to look out for if I ever get around to doing a Mariner's Compass, as I've always hoped to.  And I am glad it is done before the next block is released!
