Aves 2018 - Week 4

This year I thought I would take on a quilting challenge, so I signed up for Aves, a Block of the Week quilt by Kathryn Kerr of Green Avenue Quilts.

Every Sunday starting 21 January 2018, I receive the instructions to complete one block for the quilt. The plan is to complete the current block before the next one is released..

Week 4

With very little time to sew this week, I was eager to get started when the new block dropped on Sunday. The 6" block was appreciated, but it had a whole lot of curves and angles. With all the odd shapes, there was no way I could even start this without printing out the templates, something I can't do at home since I no longer have a printer. All I was able to do was put the required fabric to the side (I had what I needed for this block) and do a quick refresher on Y-seams, as I could tell from the pattern that if I wasn't sewing a curve, I'd be sewing a Y-seam.

Monday evening was spent cutting out the templates (printed at work), tracing them on fabric, cutting out the pieces, and marking the seams.

Tuesday I had an after work meeting, and a midnight airport pickup of a visitor here to stay for a while, but I managed to get a few curves sewn. But silly me. A lot of that seam marking I did the day before was a waste of time, seeing as I absent-mindedly used the fabric pens that are erased by a hot iron. I had to re-mark the sewing lines every time I pressed the seams.

No time to continue until Saturday, when my visitor went out on the town, and I stayed in to get some sewing done. The curves were a little dodgy, but the Y-seams looked pretty good.

Unfortunately I didn't get finished, and on Sunday while out being a tour guide the week 5 email arrived. It wasn't until the second Tuesday, when my guest was out for the evening, that I finally had a chance to pull out the sewing machine and get caught up.

So here it is. It is one of the wonkiest blocks I have ever produced. I'm not happy with it, though I am glad it is done. Hopefully the dodgy block won't be noticeable when surrounded by all the other blocks in the quilt, otherwise I may just do it again. We'll see.
