Aves 2018 - Week 16
This year I thought I would take on a quilting challenge, so I signed up for Aves, a Block of the Week quilt by Kathryn Kerr of Green Avenue Quilts.
Every Sunday starting 21 January 2018, I receive the instructions to complete one block for the quilt. The plan is to complete the current block before the next one is released.
Week 16
I was so wrong. Here I was thinking I would have an easy few weeks ahead, but no. It was time for another big round. There were pages and pages of cutting and sewing instructions, as the majority of the centre was made of strips sewn together and then cut at 45 degree angles into pre-joined diamonds.
I usually like to multitask and do different parts of a block at the same time, but this was really quite difficult for this one, as almost every step required the previous step to have been completed. And as you know, I also like to multitask by watching Netflix while cutting and piecing. But a lot of concentration was required for this one with all the steps. Nevertheless I managed to get the eight centre diamonds completed by Sunday evening.
No sewing on Monday. Having had a week off work I had heaps to do, so I worked late that day. Tuesday I was back at it, and had the star together. The instructions stated not to press the seams when turning the diamonds into the star. I wasn't a big fan as I really like pressing the seams as I go, but I complied. In hindsight I wish I had, as I am not happy with how the very centre is sitting. Hopefully that will disappear with a little quilting. With the star together, I just had a bunch of Y seams to go. Simple!
So below is my big round. Or at least it will be round when I trim it to attach next week's block, which has got to be the usual ring of triangles. Let's see if I guess right this time!
