Aves 2018 - Week 28
This year I thought I would take on a quilting challenge, so I signed up for Aves, a Block of the Week quilt by Kathryn Kerr of Green Avenue Quilts.
Every Sunday starting 21 January 2018, I receive the instructions to complete one block for the quilt. The plan is to complete the current block before the next one is released.
Week 28
This week we received some very exciting but huge instructions - we would be sewing together almost every block made so far.
Still not feeling too well, I decided to start by laying out all the blocks I needed. This is where I encountered my first problem - I didn't have enough blocks. I needed 8 small stripey blocks, but I had used all the ones I'd made. I checked the instructions from weeks ago - it said to make 20, and I'd used all 20 in different parts of the quilt already. I then cross checked all those blocks, and I used them all in the right place. I had to conclude that the instructions were incorrect and I should have been asked to make 28. No big deal, I thought, I'll just make some more.
Before I did so though, I double checked all the other blocks I had, and then I found my second problem - some of my blocks were the wrong colour. I needed blue triangles, but I had orange ones. Again I backtracked, but this time I found I had made a mistake. I had used the blue triangles around the centre circle, when I should have used the orange triangles.
What to do? Unpick the blue triangles and put the orange ones in, not so easy as the blocks had a big curve cut out of them to accommodate the big circle, but still possible. And to be honest, I really liked where the mistake blue ones were, so I didn't want to move them. Alternatively, I could use the orange ones where the blue should have been, but it didn't look right. So I decided to make a new set of blue triangle blocks. And in order not to waste the orange triangles I no longer needed, I decided to put them where the missing blue stripey blocks should be. It's my quilt, and I'll make it how I want. 😉
So all up, I needed to make 8 more blue triangle blocks before getting started on this week's assembly instructions. It took all week to do so - I was also spending my non-work time writing job applications for a couple of job opportunities I have no hope of getting, but I have to demonstrate that I am interested in career progression. One application was an easy cut and paste job, but the other had to be written from scratch as it is pitched way above my current pay level, and has a very different focus to what I usually do. So it wasn't until Saturday afternoon that I finally had this together (and yes, those are my ugg boots accidentally in the picture)…
Now, can you guess what goes in the four holes? There is still more sewing to do before this week's work is complete. But by Sunday evening, I have it done.
Looks a bit like a quilt now. The dark centre is done, and the lighter outside should be next.
