Aves 2018 - Week 31

This year I thought I would take on a quilting challenge, so I signed up for Aves, a Block of the Week quilt by Kathryn Kerr of Green Avenue Quilts.

Every Sunday starting 21 January 2018, I receive the instructions to complete one block for the quilt. The plan is to complete the current block before the next one is released.

Week 30
Simpler this week?  Well... 

I have another eight blocks to make, but they are at least a little smaller, being 3 1/2" blocks.  They are also constructed of flying geese, and I have done plenty of those so far for this quilt.  So really not much to report this week. Just some cutting, pinning, sewing, ironing, cutting, pinning, sewing, ironing, trimming, pinning, sewing, ironing, pinning, sewing, ironing, pinning, sewing, ironing, typing, photo, typing.

It is nice using some different colours, now that we are working on the outer part of the quilt.  And now that this week is done, I can spend Saturday working on the baby quilt I'd really like to have done some time in September.  I might even post a sneak peak of it next week if I remember.

The first finish of the year is actually the quilt that started this blog.  Yep, I finally got around to quilting it. Back in 2018 I thought I would take on a quilting challenge, so I signed up for  Aves , a Block of the Week quilt by Kathryn Kerr .  For 45 consecutive Sundays, I receive the instructions to complete one block for the quilt and do a bit of construction on the way. The retirement quilt

My boss's boss, who became my boss, and then my colleague - I've had a couple of temporary and permanent promotions over the years, while he has been happy to stick with his job - is about to retire. He's talked about retiring 'in a couple of years' pretty much the entire time I have worked with him.  But now it is finally time.  I've known since last year that it the date was going to be sometime in 2021, so I started planning a quilt for him as a retirement gift. I think I decided on a pattern and colours in August 2020 - I have texts from my grandma asking if I had started yet, with my reply being 'not quite...'.  But I eventually settled on a Double Irish Chain pattern by Leah Day .   It was in a scrappy style, and I found I had some blues left over from the Aves quilt that I liked, and I found a couple more at the usual fabric place.  I also headed out to my local quilt shop for some white Kona. Aunt Blanche's blocks

  A while back grandma gave me some blocks that Aunt Blanche had put together at some point.  I had no idea what to do with them.  There wasn't enough to make a quilt from, so I thought about a table runner.  That didn't seem to work either so there they sat for a very long time. I pulled them out again earlier this year, probably after watching too many Youtube quilt videos, and decided to use the free version of PreQuilt to help me figure out what to do with the blocks.  After some messing around I came up with a layout that made a small lap size quilt.  The layout used the nine similar blocks and a lot of negative space.  And I had just the right Liberty fabric I'd picked up from the usual place when they were having a sale.  With so few pieces, this was the quickest and lightest quilt I had put together in a while.  So I took the opportunity to piece it on the antique Singer.
