Aves 2018 - Week 14

This year I thought I would take on a quilting challenge, so I signed up for Aves , a Block of the Week quilt by Kathryn Kerr of Green Avenue Quilts . Every Sunday starting 21 January 2018, I receive the instructions to complete one block for the quilt. The plan is to complete the current block before the next one is released. Week 14 As it was a rainy morning, I thought I would just potter around the house, read a book drink coffee etc.  At 11:00 I logged into the website and checked out the just released block.  Wow - this was going to feel like a holiday compared to the sewing I've been doing lately.  All that was required of me this week was a single 6 1/2 inch block, with nothing but straight lines.  So, a few hours (and a few episodes of TV shows) later, I was done. This is one of the blocks that will bridge the colour change in the quilt from dark centre diamond to the lighter outside.  Looking at the quilt design, I guess I will be doing more six in...

Week 13 Another ring of triangles this week.  I think I can do this block in my sleep now.  I took my time just doing a few seams every evening, as there is no longer any thinking required for this one.  It was nice to do a ring in blue, seeing as the circle block that will go in the middle is very orange. The six sections were together by Thursday, and on Friday I joined them together, trimmed everything up and removed the foundation papers from behind. All I had to do on Saturday was a single seam, though admittedly a tricky one.  What was I going to do with the rest of the day?  The block doesn't sit quite as flat a...

Week 12 Yep, another big round one this week.  A centre star, triangle columns and curved wedges.  I got started late on this one, but managed to get the centre together by Tuesday.  There were three different ways the spokes could be put together, foundation piecing, covered corners or fast flying geese.  So considering my late start, and because I have already used the other methods in the quilt so far, I decided to do the fast flying geese.  After a google to figure out what the fast flying geese method was, of course. A couple of days later I had six flying geese for each of the eight columns, and had then attached them to ...

Week 11 It was really nice to get finished early last week, and take a bit of a break from sewing.  Especially seeing as this week was such a challenge.  Not only did I get the instructions for the next block, but also received the next two sets of assembly instructions.  All up, nearly every block I have made so far would be handled. I spent quite a bit of time laying everything out, cutting out pieces for the new block.  I also decided to redo a few seams - now that different pieces are being joined together, I am finding some spots that could be a little better. Eventually I got started following the instructions for the new block...
