Aves 2018 - Week 11

This year I thought I would take on a quilting challenge, so I signed up for Aves, a Block of the Week quilt by Kathryn Kerr of Green Avenue Quilts.

Every Sunday starting 21 January 2018, I receive the instructions to complete one block for the quilt. The plan is to complete the current block before the next one is released.

Week 11
It was really nice to get finished early last week, and take a bit of a break from sewing.  Especially seeing as this week was such a challenge.  Not only did I get the instructions for the next block, but also received the next two sets of assembly instructions.  All up, nearly every block I have made so far would be handled.

I spent quite a bit of time laying everything out, cutting out pieces for the new block.  I also decided to redo a few seams - now that different pieces are being joined together, I am finding some spots that could be a little better. Eventually I got started following the instructions for the new blocks and the second assembly.  The third assembly required some of this week's blocks, so that was going to have to wait.

It is probably a good thing I didn't rush this, as on Wednesday there was a comment on the website questioning the orientation of the second assembly instructions.  Having a closer look, I agreed, and decided that even if there was nothing wrong with the instructions, I preferred it the alternative way.  So I had a bit of unpicking ahead of me.  As it was, updated instructions were sent out the next day.

By Thursday evening, I finally finished this week's blocks - 16 blocks of 3 1/2 inches each, in two colours.  I'll be using the blue this week, and the orange will be set aside for later.

On Friday I finally finished the second assembly instructions.  These will go in between the four outer circles, of which I currently only have one, not including the centre circle.  So I have the feeling another large circle is coming fairly soon. I've still got three to go.

Seeing as the blocks of the week were complete, I also managed get started on the third set of assembly instructions. First I made a 21 1/2" square...

Then I had to be brave and cut a circle in the middle...

And after using almost every straight pin I own, and some very slow sewing, the centre of the quilt was complete.

I'm taking a break from things for a couple of days, and am heading off on my first overnight hike.  So I'll see what week 12 has in store when I get back.
